Hansel and Gretel is about hunger. Real Hunger!. It is also about displacement and dispossession. The traditional storyline is about two young children who find refuge in the forest and use their cunning to claim the cottage for their own. This story thread feeds into our suspicions of stranger and the sanctity of the nuclear family. But the real story is more than this. My interpretation examines the storyline from the perspective of the witch. Why is she in the forest? Why does she lock up the children? Why are the children fed into fatness and why do the children burn the witch?
